Pioneer Lakes RV Park
Somerset, Pennsylvania
104 RV Sites, 7 Cabins, 12 Tent Sites
Pioneer Lakes RV Park in Somerset, Pennsylvania, provides a gated mountain resort camping experience in Somerset County's Laurel Highlands, where the rolling Allegheny Mountain terrain, the deep forest landscape, and the concentration of national cultural and natural landmarks within an hour's drive create one of Pennsylvania's most reward-dense campground locations for guests whose interests span Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural genius, the courage of the Flight 93 passengers, and the outdoor white-water recreation of Ohiopyle State Park. The resort's spa, cabins, dining, and comprehensive amenity roster serve the extended-stay couples and families whose Laurel Highlands itinerary requires multiple days to cover the region's extraordinary range of cultural and natural experiences.
The resort's facility delivers a complete mountain resort experience: a gated entrance, cabins for non-RV lodging, a spa for therapeutic services, outdoor pool, a pond and mountain setting, sports courts, game room, dining on site, planned activities, wine and beer tasting nearby, gaga ball, horseshoes, hiking trails through the surrounding Somerset County highlands, showers, bathrooms, laundry, dump station, and Wi-Fi collectively create a self-sufficient resort environment in the Laurel Highlands' mountain character. The spa services reflect the resort's wellness dimension that distinguishes it from activity-only campgrounds, and the cabins accommodate the group travel that Laurel Highlands weekend getaways from Pittsburgh commonly involve. Kayaking and canoeing on the pond and nearby waterways provide the water recreation complement to the mountain hiking.
The Flight 93 National Memorial, approximately 20 miles north of Somerset via US-219 near Shanksville, is one of the most emotionally affecting sites in the National Park System—the memorial preserves the field where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001, after passengers voted to resist the hijackers, and the memorial's Wall of Names, the white marble boulder marking the crash site, and the Tower of Voices wind chime memorial create a national mourning and courage landscape of profound quiet and dignity. The Visitor Center's documentary and artifact collection provides the historical context that makes the memorial visit most meaningful.
Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's most celebrated residential commission built for the Kaufmann family in 1935 over a waterfall on Bear Run in Mill Run approximately 25 miles north of Somerset, is consistently ranked among the most important works of architecture in American history—a reinforced concrete building cantilevered directly over a waterfall in a demonstration of structural engineering and spatial drama that made Fallingwater the subject of Wright's famous Time magazine cover in 1938. Ohiopyle State Park surrounds Fallingwater and the Bear Run Nature Reserve in 20,000 acres of Youghiogheny River gorge where the river's Class III-V white water supports commercial rafting and kayaking that rivals any whitewater resource in the eastern United States.
Pioneer Lakes RV Park operates year-round in Somerset County's four-season Appalachian mountain climate, with the spring and summer seasons delivering the most complete access to the surrounding Laurel Highlands' outdoor recreation—Ohiopyle's white-water season, the Deep Creek Lake area's kayaking, and the Youghiogheny River's fishing—alongside the cultural landmark visits that the region rewards. The Seven Springs and Hidden Valley ski areas provide the winter resort infrastructure that keeps Somerset County's Laurel Highlands economy active through the mountain snow season, and the resort's spa services and indoor amenities create a year-round comfort base for guests whose Laurel Highlands visit extends into the winter recreation season.
