Perry Backwoods Campgrounds

42 RV Sites

Perry Backwoods Campgrounds in New Lexington, Ohio, offers 21 RV sites on nine family-owned acres, with full-hookup back-in sites carrying water, sewer, and electric on 20, 30, and 50-amp service, and rigs accepted to 60 feet. The layout is big-rig friendly — unusual for a campground this size in the southeast Ohio hill country. Twenty-one sites run from full-hookup back-ins with 30 and 50-amp service to primitive RV sites for guests who need less. Rigs up to 60 feet fit, and a dump station serves those without full hookups. Restrooms and showers are on site. Pets are welcome. On-site facilities are straightforward. A playground serves families, and hiking runs from the property through the wooded Perry County hills. The nine-acre scale and family ownership mean guests deal directly with the operators, and the campground continues to add facilities. Off-roading areas are nearby for guests hauling ATVs. New Lexington sits on US-22 about 60 miles southeast of Columbus, in the reclaimed coal country that has grown back into some of the most rugged terrain in an otherwise glacially flattened state. Hocking Hills State Park, the AEP ReCreation Land, and the Wayne National Forest are all within day-trip range. The campground serves the southeast Ohio camping season, drawing from the Columbus and Athens markets. Fall color through October is the most scenic window, and summer weekends see the heaviest demand. Reserve ahead for both.

Fish Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground

19 RV Sites

Fish Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground in Hampton, Tennessee, offers 19 full-hookup RV sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, sized for rigs to 45 feet on a big-rig-friendly layout, at the base of Roan Mountain in the upper Doe River valley. An outdoor pool and ball field sit on a property built as a base for southern Appalachian mountain recreation. Nineteen back-in sites carry water, sewer, and electric on 20, 30, and 50-amp, sized to 45 feet, with picnic tables and site WiFi. A dump station, laundry, restrooms, and showers handle the practical side. One vehicle is allowed per site, with an extra vehicle fee of $1 per night on arrival — among the more modest such charges in this batch. An outdoor pool anchors the summer, with a ball field and basketball on the grounds. Boating, swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and biking all run from the area, with off-roading and a golf course nearby. The cold, clear mountain streams around Roan Mountain hold some of the finest wild trout water in the East, which is why many guests book. Pets are welcome. Hampton sits in Carter County where the Cherokee National Forest's spruce-fir summits, the Appalachian Trail's high-elevation traverse, and Watauga Lake's shoreline converge — one of the most recreation-rich environments in the southern Appalachians. The campground serves the mountain season. The June rhododendron bloom on Roan Mountain and October foliage are the two peak windows, with summer lake and trout traffic between them. With 19 sites, reserve well ahead for any of the three.

Ridge Rider Campground

28 RV Sites, 44 Tent Sites

Ridge Rider Campground occupies 222 acres in Little Orleans, Maryland, where the Potomac River winds out of the Western Maryland highlands and the ridge-and-valley terrain of the Appalachian Mountains frames a river valley that has changed little since the canal era of the early nineteenth century. The ridge rider campground's position in this unhurried corner of Allegany County gives it a natural seclusion that most East Coast campgrounds cannot offer—surrounded on most sides by protected public lands and bordered by one of the great historic transportation corridors of American history. The campground offers tent camping, RV sites, and cabin accommodations, with the cabins representing a particularly comfortable option—sleeping eight with full kitchens, AC and heat, WiFi, and pet-friendly policies that make them a genuine home base for extended family visits. A swimming pool, stocked fishing pond, basketball courts, playground, and well-stocked camp store cover the day-to-day recreation needs, while a pavilion handles group gatherings and the central recreation room with pool tables, pinball machines, and games provides evening entertainment when the fireflies come out along the Potomac bottom. Little Orleans sits at the western edge of Allegany County, where the landscape begins the geological transition from the valley-and-ridge terrain of central Maryland to the more dramatic river gorge country of the upper Potomac. The town itself is little more than a cluster of buildings around Bill's Place—a bar and general store that has served Potomac River travelers since 1906—but the surroundings are spectacular, and the sense of genuine rural remoteness within two to three hours of Baltimore and Washington D.C. explains why the campground draws repeat visitors who make the drive deliberately rather than discovering it by accident. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park runs immediately adjacent to the campground, offering 185 miles of towpath open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders along the route where mule-drawn canal boats carried coal from Cumberland to Georgetown from 1828 to 1924. The towpath here is flat, well-shaded, and follows the Potomac through some of the most beautiful river scenery in the mid-Atlantic—a genuinely rewarding multi-day cycling route with the campground as its western anchor. Green Ridge State Forest, 43,000 acres of managed woodland directly north of the campground, provides mountain biking trails, hunting, and dispersed camping on terrain that gives serious off-road cyclists an eastern destination that rivals the better-known trail systems of West Virginia. Ridge Rider Campground operates through the Maryland camping season with spring, summer, and fall all offering genuinely appealing conditions in the Potomac highlands. Fishing in the river and the stocked pond draws year-round visitors when the weather cooperates, and the canal towpath is at its most beautiful during fall foliage and spring wildflower seasons when the bottomland forest along the Potomac is at its most vivid.
