5.02 reviewsMammoth Ridge RV Park and Campground in Greeneville, Tennessee, is a mountain-adjacent camping destination in Greene County — a tranquil retreat in the northeastern Tennessee valley and ridgeline country that gives guests access to both the Cherokee National Forest's Nolichucky River gorge corridor and the Gatlinburg-Great Smoky Mountains corridor 45 miles to the southwest. Greeneville's Greene County position on US-321 and TN-70, in the Nolichucky River valley between Morristown and Johnson City, gives the campground the specific east Tennessee character of a community campground in one of the region's most historically significant towns — the home of President Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, whose tailor shop and homestead give Greene County the specific presidential heritage that the surrounding Appalachian foothills' agricultural and railroad history supplements.
RV sites and tent camping with the complete campground amenities give Mammoth Ridge the comfortable Greene County base for the Cherokee National Forest recreation, the Nolichucky River whitewater, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park day-trip corridor that the northeast Tennessee position enables within the 45-mile drive to the park's Cosby entrance. The campground's ridge-adjacent setting gives the property the mountain view character of the east Tennessee ridge and valley topography that the Great Appalachian Valley's agricultural land and the surrounding forested ridgelines sustain in the specific Greene County landscape. Pets are welcome.
Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in downtown Greeneville preserves the three properties most associated with Tennessee's most historically significant president — the homestead on Main Street where Johnson lived from 1851 until his death in 1875, the Andrew Johnson Tailor Shop where the self-taught statesman began his political career, and the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery where the 17th President and his family are interred under the marble obelisk that the federal government erected in 1878. Johnson's complex legacy — the only president impeached in the 19th century and the leader who navigated Reconstruction's most contentious first years — gives the Greeneville historic site the specific political and constitutional history significance that the Tennessee presidential heritage corridor emphasizes.
The Nolichucky River Gorge, 20 miles south of Greeneville in the Cherokee National Forest's Unaka Mountains section, carves one of the most dramatic gorges in the southern Appalachians — a 14-mile canyon section from Erwin, Tennessee, to Poplar, North Carolina, where the Class III-IV whitewater in the upper gorge gives commercial rafting operations and experienced kayakers the most technically demanding and most remote whitewater run in the Tennessee section of the Cherokee National Forest. The gorge's sheer walls, the otter population on the Nolichucky's mid-section, and the Black Mountain salamander's endemic range in the adjacent slopes give the gorge the specific ecological significance of an isolated southern Appalachian river canyon.
Mammoth Ridge RV Park serves guests through Greene County's mountain camping season from spring through fall, with the spring wildflower bloom in the Cherokee National Forest from April through May and the October fall foliage on the northeast Tennessee ridgelines representing the two most photogenic and most visitor-active seasons in the Appalachian foothills. Roan Mountain State Park, 40 miles northeast of Greeneville in Carter County, is the gateway to the Roan Mountain rhododendron gardens — the largest natural rhododendron garden in the world, with 600 acres of Catawba rhododendron in spectacular bloom from mid-June through early July on the Roan Mountain Massif above 6,000 feet. Reserve sites ahead for the June rhododendron bloom and the October fall color peak.

Bring what you need though, because the camp store doesn’t stock what you might expect. The summer heat and lack of rain made the roads extremely dusty around the pa...Show more
