Fish Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground

Hampton, Tennessee

19 RV Sites

Fish Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground in Hampton, Tennessee, occupies a prime position in Carter County's upper Doe River valley at the base of Roan Mountain, where the Cherokee National Forest's magnificent spruce-fir summits, the Appalachian Trail's high-elevation traverse, and the Watauga Lake shoreline create one of the most outdoor recreation-rich environments in the southern Appalachians for hikers, anglers, swimmers, and the avid trout fishers who know the cold, clear mountain streams of the Roan Mountain region as some of the finest wild trout water in the East. The campground's big-rig-friendly full hookup infrastructure and pool make it a complete base for the full range of southern Appalachian mountain recreation. The campground's amenity package serves the active outdoor recreation visitor who needs reliable utility connections and organized activity alongside the mountain environment's independent recreation opportunities: full hookup RV sites with big-rig access, an outdoor pool, laundry, Wi-Fi, showers, bathrooms, dump station, ball field, and fishing for the Doe River-adjacent streams provide a complete facility for extended mountain stays. The golf course access nearby serves guests who mix mountain hiking with fairway recreation, and the off-road vehicle trails accessible from the surrounding Cherokee National Forest expand the outdoor recreation footprint for guests who bring OHV equipment. Canoeing and kayaking on the Watauga River and Watauga Lake complete the water recreation options. Hampton sits at the confluence of the Doe River and Laurel Fork in a narrow mountain valley carved by glacially cold streams that support exceptional populations of wild brook trout—the native Appalachian trout species that requires the coldest, cleanest water in the entire trout family's temperature spectrum—in headwater streams accessible from the national forest trail system above the campground. The snorkeling available in Hampton's clear mountain streams reflects the remarkable water clarity typical of these high-gradient Appalachian streams, where summer visitors can observe wild brook and rainbow trout in the shallows of pools accessible without specialized equipment. Roan Mountain State Park, approximately 12 miles east via US-19E, provides access to Roan Mountain's famous Catawba rhododendron display—hundreds of acres of wild rhododendron blooming in mid-June at 6,000-foot elevation in one of the most celebrated seasonal wildflower events in the southern Appalachians—alongside year-round hiking and a fully equipped state park campground with cabins. Watauga Lake, a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir on the Watauga River, lies just minutes from Hampton and provides boating, swimming, and fishing in a mountain lake environment surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest's ridge-and-valley terrain. The Appalachian Trail crosses Roan Mountain's summit above the campground. Fish Springs at Little Pond Mountain Campground operates year-round in Carter County's mountain climate, with the spring trout stocking season from late March through May and the Roan Mountain rhododendron bloom in mid-June representing the two most distinctively seasonal recreational events that draw visitors specifically to the Hampton area. Summer's cool mountain temperatures—significantly lower than the Tennessee Valley communities below—make July and August genuinely comfortable camping months in the Roan Mountain corridor, and fall's hardwood foliage through October creates the most visually spectacular season in a landscape whose deciduous forest coverage is among the densest in the entire southern Appalachian chain.
