Shoshone Falls, about 25 miles east on the Snake River near Twin Falls, drops 212 feet over a basalt rim—a free-flowing waterfall taller than Niagara Falls that earns the title "Niagara of the West" with particular accuracy during spring snowmelt when the Snake River runs at its most powerful. Box Canyon State Park, near Wendell along the rim of the Snake River Canyon, protects a 300-foot basalt gorge carved by the ancient Bonneville Flood through the Pleistocene lava plain—a geological monument to the catastrophic ice-age flooding that shaped the entire Snake River drainage. Twin Falls, 25 miles east, provides the full urban amenity range for the Magic Valley's largest city.
