Merna sits at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 92 in the heart of the Sandhills — the 19,000-square-mile grass-stabilized dune system that is the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the darkest night skies in the country. For a city-operated recreation area the amenity list is unusually good — an outdoor pool, a boat ramp and boat docks, a ball field, sport courts for basketball and volleyball, and a playground, with swimming and fishing on the water. The resort sits at the doorstep of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Black Hills National Forest, with both national and state park access close.
