Split Rock Park Campground
Garretson, South Dakota
7 RV Sites, 20 Tent Sites
5.02 reviewsPositioned on the northwestern edge of Garretson, South Dakota, on the banks of Split Rock Creek, Split Rock Park Campground overlooks a natural waterfall created where the creek cuts through the pink Sioux quartzite formations that give this corner of eastern South Dakota its distinctive geological character—a landscape of ancient exposed bedrock, narrow gorges, and clear spring-fed water that provides a natural setting contrasting sharply with the flat agricultural plains surrounding the Garretson area and offering recreational opportunities that make this community campground a genuine regional attraction. The park's combination of geological uniqueness, creek fishing access, and paddling launch infrastructure give it an outdoor recreation appeal rooted in the natural features of Split Rock Creek itself.
Campsite infrastructure includes clean restrooms, a playground for younger guests, and a boat ramp that provides kayak and canoe launch access to Split Rock Creek for downstream paddling excursions through the quartzite canyon corridor. The creek's fishing is productive for smallmouth bass, panfish, and northern pike in the deeper pools below the waterfall, and the quartzite rock formations along the creek banks provide a visually dramatic backdrop for campfire evenings at sites positioned with creek views. The campground's community-operated character gives it a relaxed and genuinely local quality distinct from commercial RV parks in the eastern South Dakota region.
Devil's Gulch, within the town of Garretson along Split Rock Creek, is a narrow quartzite chasm with a historical footnote: the site of the legendary leap attributed to outlaw Jesse James while being pursued by a posse in 1876, though the historical accuracy of the story has been subject to debate. The gulch's dramatic quartzite walls and the bridge spanning the narrow gap make it a visually striking heritage site accessible within a short walk of downtown Garretson. Palisades State Park, a South Dakota state park featuring similar Sioux quartzite formations, rock climbing, and Split Rock Creek access, is accessible within a few miles of the campground and extends the geological recreation corridor available to guests during their stay.
Sioux Falls, approximately 25 miles southwest of Garretson, is South Dakota's largest city and provides the full urban amenity spectrum—dining, shopping, medical facilities, cultural venues, and the Falls Park waterfall attraction where the Big Sioux River drops over the same Sioux quartzite ledges that define the regional geology—that gives guests staying in Garretson straightforward access to a major city without camping within the urban development footprint. The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls and the Sertoma Butterfly House provide additional programmed family-oriented destinations accessible on a half-day trip from the campground.
Split Rock Park Campground is open through the South Dakota warm-weather camping season, with the eastern South Dakota climate supporting comfortable outdoor recreation from May through September. Spring and early summer offer the most reliable creek water levels for kayaking the Split Rock Canyon corridor, while summer weekends bring the highest demand for campsites from Sioux Falls area visitors looking for a natural escape close to home. The campground's position along the geological corridor of Sioux quartzite formations gives it a natural heritage appeal that rewards exploration beyond a single overnight stop.
