5.02 reviewsSalida RV Resort in Salida, Colorado, claims over 1,600 feet of private Arkansas River frontage, delivering a genuine whitewater-adjacent camping experience in the heart of Chaffee County's outdoor recreation corridor—one of the most concentrated adventure sport landscapes in the American West. Set where the Arkansas River carves through the Sawatch Range's eastern foothills between the Collegiate Peaks and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the resort serves rafters, kayakers, hikers, mountain bikers, and fly fishing enthusiasts who make Salida their base for exploring the surrounding fourteener country and river canyon systems.
The resort's Arkansas River frontage provides private put-in and take-out access for non-motorized rafts and floats, a meaningful amenity for guests bringing their own watercraft who want to access the river without driving to public launch points. Full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer service accommodate large rigs on big-rig-friendly pads, and on-site amenities include a boat ramp, sports courts, dog park, fitness center, game room, and Wi-Fi—an infrastructure package suited to both active recreation guests and those seeking a comfortable base for the region's seasonal programming.
Salida's landscape is defined by the geological drama of the Arkansas River Headwaters Recreation Area, where the river descends through a series of renowned whitewater rapids from its headwaters near Leadville through the Royal Gorge below Cañon City. The Sawatch Range's Collegiate Peaks—including Mount Harvard, Mount Columbia, Mount Yale, and Mount Princeton—rise above 14,000 feet to the west, providing the vertical backdrop that makes the Salida area visually extraordinary even by Colorado mountain standards. The surrounding national forests and Bureau of Land Management lands offer trail systems ranging from beginner-friendly valley walks to serious alpine approaches requiring technical gear.
Salida's downtown has evolved into one of Colorado's most celebrated small mountain communities, with a concentration of art galleries, restaurants, breweries, and the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area's whitewater infrastructure creating a visitor economy that rivals much larger Colorado resort communities without the associated price pressure. The Brown's Canyon National Monument, designated in 2015, protects the Arkansas River's most scenic and ecologically significant corridor immediately south of Buena Vista and is accessible from multiple river access points in the area. Monarch Mountain ski area, operating on US-50 over Monarch Pass approximately 20 miles west, provides winter skiing access from the same base.
Salida RV Resort operates seasonally from spring through fall, with the May-through-August whitewater season driving peak demand as commercial rafting operations and private boaters converge on the Arkansas River's legendary Brown's Canyon and Numbers sections. Fall's cooler temperatures, changing aspen color, and uncrowded trails attract a second wave of guests who find the shoulder season's lower rates and more available reservations combine with excellent outdoor conditions for hiking and cycling. The resort's river frontage and position in Salida's active outdoor community make it one of the most well-situated campgrounds in central Colorado for guests whose priorities center on Arkansas River access.
