Mystic Quarry Resort in Canyon Lake, Texas, occupies a former limestone quarry in Comal County's Hill Country edge, where the vertical quarry walls and the clear water that fills the excavated limestone basin have been transformed into a resort camping destination with swimming, rock climbing and cliff jumping off the quarry walls, a hot tub, fitness center, and bocce ball in a setting that no purpose-built resort could create because the quarry's industrial geological character—the exposed limestone strata, the deep blue-green water filling the basin, and the dramatic vertical walls framing the swimming area—is the unique amenity that distinguishes Mystic Quarry from every other campground in the Texas Hill Country corridor. The big-rig-friendly sites and full utility services make the resort equally accessible to travelers with large motorhomes. The resort's amenity package reflects its unique quarry setting and the Hill Country resort market's expectations: a gated entrance, big-rig-friendly full hookup sites, the quarry's natural swimming hole with rock climbing and cliff jumping access from the limestone walls, hot tub and sauna, outdoor pool, fitness center, bocce ball, volleyball, horseshoes, hiking and walking trails through the surrounding Hill Country terrain, billiards, a dog park, pavilion, dining, general store, propane fills, showers, bathrooms, laundry, Wi-Fi, and the golf course access nearby collectively create a resort experience that pairs unusual natural character with comprehensive service infrastructure. Paddle boarding and kayaking in the quarry's still water provide the gentler water recreation complement to the cliff jumping activity. Canyon Lake itself—the Guadalupe River reservoir approximately 8 miles from the resort in Comal County—provides the broader water recreation context for the Mystic Quarry area, where Canyon Lake's 8,240 surface acres and 80 miles of shoreline support the boating, bass fishing, and cliff jumping culture that the Comal County lake community has developed around the Corps of Engineers reservoir since its completion in 1964. The Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam produces the most accessible and popular tubing float in Texas—a 5-mile stretch of cool, clear Hill Country river through the Canyon Lake Gorge that supports dozens of tube and kayak rental outfitters serving the millions of annual visitors to the New Braunfels and Canyon Lake recreation corridor. New Braunfels, approximately 20 miles southeast of the resort via TX-306 and I-35, is the center of the Hill Country tubing and water park economy—Schlitterbahn Waterpark, which invented the watercoaster concept and pioneered the uphill water ride technology that most major water parks now operate, remains the anchor attraction of a city whose Texas German heritage, Gruene Historic District's dance hall and craft shops, and the Comal River's spring-fed tubes define a visitor culture of unusual local character. San Marcos's record-setting springs and Texas State University campus add additional cultural depth to the I-35 Hill Country corridor 15 miles to the north. Mystic Quarry Resort operates year-round in Comal County's Hill Country climate, with the summer cooling effect of the quarry's spring-fed water and the cliff jumping activity making the resort particularly appealing during the Texas summer heat season from May through September when the quarry water's constant cool temperature provides natural relief from ambient air temperatures that regularly exceed 100 degrees. The mild Hill Country winters allow year-round camping in conditions where the hot tub and fitness center serve as weather-independent amenities for the shoulder and off-season guests who find the quarry's geological character and the surrounding Hill Country landscape most rewarding in the uncrowded November-through-March period.
