Mad River Rapids RV Park
Arcata, California
12 RV Sites
Mad River Rapids RV Park in Arcata, California, provides a full-service RV resort on the Mad River's coastal terrace in Humboldt County, positioning guests in the heart of California's Redwood Coast where the world's tallest trees, the Pacific Ocean's wild beaches, and the remarkable cultural character of a university city built around ecological values and independent commercial spirit create one of the most distinctive regional identities in California. Positioned near the junction of the Mad River and the Humboldt Bay system approximately 280 miles north of San Francisco, the resort serves both California Coast travelers on US-101 and destination visitors drawn to Humboldt County's redwood forests, coastal recreation, and the Arcata community's nationally recognized progressive environmental character.
The resort provides big-rig-friendly full hookup sites, a game room with billiards, ping pong, and arcade, a general store, dining, recreation center, laundry, showers, dump station, and Wi-Fi in a complete service roster for extended redwood coast stays. The Mad River's proximity delivers river recreation access adjacent to the property, and the golf course and casino nearby expand the recreation options available to guests whose Humboldt County itinerary extends beyond the redwood forests to the commercial recreation and entertainment facilities of the Eureka-Arcata metropolitan corridor. The boating and water recreation opportunities of Humboldt Bay are accessible from the resort's Arcata position within minutes.
Arcata is one of the most ecologically distinctive small cities in California—a community of approximately 20,000 anchored by Humboldt State University whose environmental science programs and the city's own sustainability initiatives have made Arcata a national model for urban ecology, including the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary where the city's innovative wetland wastewater treatment system simultaneously manages municipal waste and creates premier birding habitat in a marsh that attracts over 300 bird species. The Arcata Community Forest, 790 acres of second-growth redwood forest managed for recreation and ecological values since 1955, provides hiking and mountain biking terrain within city limits.
The Redwood National and State Parks complex, extending from the Klamath River north through Del Norte County, protects the most significant remaining stands of old-growth coast redwood on Earth in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve that safeguards trees exceeding 350 feet in height and 2,500 years in age. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park's Fern Canyon—a slot canyon walled in five-fingered ferns and fed by Gold Bluffs Creek—and the Tall Trees Grove's Hyperion tree (the world's tallest living organism) are accessible within day-trip range from the resort via US-101 north.
Mad River Rapids RV Park operates year-round in Humboldt County's temperate maritime climate, where the Pacific's thermal influence delivers the mild, overcast, frequently foggy conditions that the coast redwood ecosystem requires and that give the Redwood Coast its mysterious, primordial atmosphere regardless of season. Summer's tourist season on the redwood parks is busy but manageable compared to California's more congested national parks, and fall and spring offer the most uncrowded access to Prairie Creek's elk herds and the old-growth cathedral groves that make Humboldt County a destination of singular natural importance. The resort's year-round operations serve the continuous transit and destination traffic of the US-101 coastal corridor.
