Cuzn Eddyz Campground

Merna, Nebraska

17 RV Sites, 2 Tent Sites

At the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 92 in Merna, Nebraska—in the heart of the Sandhills, the 19,000-square-mile grass-stabilized dune system that constitutes the largest such formation in the Western Hemisphere—Cuzn Eddyz Campground provides the full hookup camping infrastructure and the gathering-place atmosphere that traveling guests need to use the Nebraska Sandhills as an intentional destination rather than a windshield blur. The campground's collection of more than 30 vintage windmills—all different, all photogenic, all representing the mechanical ingenuity that homesteaders used to access Sandhills groundwater—functions as the most distinctive roadside gallery in the region and gives the campground a specific character that no amenity checklist fully captures. When the Nebraska Sandhills is the destination, Merna is the base camp. Seventeen full hookup sites with 50-amp, 30-amp, and 110-volt electric options accommodate the range of RV electrical needs, with eight pull-through and nine back-in positions covering the full spectrum of rig configurations. Unlimited tent sites serve the primitive camping population. A gender-specific bath and shower house with laundry facilities handles the practical daily needs, and the main office operates a boutique retail gift shop stocked with the Nebraska Sandhills merchandise and regional items that destination campground guests consistently look for. A covered pavilion, playground, and relatively large grass field provide the gathering and recreation space that families with children specifically need. A baseball field with night lights—a particular amenity for late summer evenings when the Sandhills' extraordinary light quality turns even recreational games into something more memorable—adds a specific and unusual activity option that most campgrounds don't provide. The Nebraska Sandhills landscape surrounding Merna offers one of the most genuinely remarkable natural environments in the American interior. The grass-stabilized dunes—rising and falling in topography that looks oceanic from a high point, covered in native bluestem, switchgrass, and the wildflowers of an ecosystem that supports greater species diversity than any other North American grassland—host breeding populations of sandhill cranes, greater prairie chickens, and the secretive grassland birds that have become increasingly rare as the continent's native grasslands disappear. The Sandhills' groundwater, the largest aquifer reserve in North America under this section of the Great Plains, feeds a system of lakes, wetlands, and spring-fed rivers of exceptional clarity. The nearby river provides the most actively recreational natural access from the campground—tanking, tubing, and kayaking on the Sandhills' spring-fed streams being the summer activity that Nebraska residents have built an entire regional tradition around. Tanking specifically—floating down a river in a repurposed stock tank, a Nebraska Sandhills invention that has since spread to other prairie states—is the most authentically Nebraskan recreational experience available, and the Sandhills' clear, cold, spring-fed rivers provide the optimal conditions for it. Broken Bow, the Custer County seat, and the surrounding communities of Anselmo and Berwyn provide the commercial amenities that a Sandhills camping stay requires. Cuzn Eddyz Campground operates seasonally through the Nebraska camping season. The spring and fall migration periods, when sandhill cranes move through the Sandhills in numbers that stop traffic on the rural highways, represent the most spectacular natural events in the regional calendar. Summer brings the river tubing season and the long light evenings that Sandhills camping is specifically known for. Reserve your pull-through site and bring enough time to discover what the largest grass-stabilized dune system in the Western Hemisphere looks like from inside it.
