Camp Lakewood Campground
Effingham, Illinois
52 RV Sites, 3 Tent Sites
5.04 reviewsCamp Lakewood Campground in Effingham, Illinois, occupies one of the most strategically located sites available to a Central Illinois campground — within one mile of both I-70 and I-57, the two interstate highways that make Effingham the crossroads city of downstate Illinois and funnel significant east-west and north-south traffic through its exits year-round. The campground leverages that highway accessibility without sacrificing the lake-centered natural character that makes it worth staying multiple nights rather than just one.
The full accommodation range spans RV sites with 50-amp hookup service, deluxe cabins for guests who want resort-level glamping comfort, rustic cabins for those who prefer a simpler woodland experience, and spacious tent camping spots for traditional campers arriving without a cabin or rig preference. The campground is golf cart-friendly throughout — a detail that simplifies navigation for guests across the property's full terrain. A lake with kayaking, fishing, and a sandy beach anchors the outdoor recreation, providing the kind of summer-central lake activity that gives families a reason to stay an extra night beyond what the travel itinerary required. A lounge on-site handles social evenings and provides a comfortable gathering space when the campfire circle reaches capacity. Pets are welcome throughout the year-round operation.
The Effingham area's Central Illinois landscape is gently rolling prairie and agricultural land — corn and soybean country defined by the wide horizon and open sky that characterizes the Illinois heartland. The campground's lake provides a natural focal point that feels genuinely removed from the interstate character that defines Effingham's outer commercial corridors, and the wooded surroundings of Camp Lakewood give the grounds a quiet woodland feel that surprises guests who arrive expecting little more than a highway stopover.
The Cross at the Crossroads — a 198-foot steel cross visible for miles on the Effingham skyline and one of the tallest crosses in the United States — has become one of the region's most recognized landmarks and is worth a close-up visit for its scale alone. My Garage Museum in Effingham celebrates automotive history through an extensive collection of classic cars and memorabilia. The Effingham Performance Center hosts touring Broadway productions, concerts, and entertainment events on a schedule that makes it a legitimate reason to plan an overnight stay around a specific performance. Downtown Effingham's dining scene includes Firefly Grill Farm & Table and a range of locally owned restaurants that reflect the city's status as a regional service hub rather than a simple interstate exit.
Camp Lakewood Campground operates year-round, with the summer season bringing the lake recreation calendar to its peak and the campground's central location attracting both planned multi-night stays and same-day bookings from travelers who need quality overnight options at the I-70/I-57 interchange. Book ahead for summer holiday weekends when the beach and lake activity drive demand beyond what walk-in availability can handle, and check the Effingham Performance Center's schedule when planning stays — overnight bookings tied to a show make the campground's walkable-to-downtown position an added practical advantage.

Serene setting, playground for kids with a variety of equipment and successful fishing for the family. We ordered their homemade pizza and it was good. But, the best part was the spa like restrooms! A true rare find when traveling. A must stay and must return.

Very accommodating after I flubbed my reservation. Pull thru site was level.
Hookups were easy access and didn't need to unhitch the truck. Loved the value for the price!
