Bolivar East RV Park
Bolivar Peninsula, Texas
8 RV Sites
Bolivar East RV Park in Gilchrist on the Bolivar Peninsula, Texas, occupies the eastern portion of the 27-mile barrier island that runs from High Island at the mainland to the Bolivar Roads pass across from Galveston — a Galveston County coastal community with direct Gulf of Mexico beach access, a strong birdwatching tradition anchored by the peninsula's position on the Central Flyway, and the particular small-community character of a Texas coastal strip that remained relatively undeveloped even before Hurricane Ike dramatically altered the peninsula's built landscape in 2008. The campground's concrete pads, full hookups, and family-friendly atmosphere give guests a comfortable and well-equipped base for exploring one of the Texas Gulf Coast's most naturally rich and historically layered coastal environments.
Full hookup sites with concrete pads and driveways accommodate back-in configurations with 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections in a layout built for comfortable multi-night stays rather than the brief stopping-point format that less-equipped campgrounds on the peninsula provide. Pet-friendly sites, fire rings and grills, and picnic tables give the campground a social and practical character suited to families and traveling companions who use the RV site as a base for beach days, birdwatching excursions, and the Bolivar Peninsula's variety of low-key coastal activities. The campground's small, friendly community atmosphere reflects the Bolivar Peninsula's overall human scale.
Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, at the western end of the peninsula near Port Bolivar, is one of the most important shorebird and waterbird concentration sites on the entire Gulf of Mexico coast — thousands of shorebirds, wading birds, terns, and skimmers use the tidal flats during spring and fall migration, creating one of the most spectacular waterbird congregation experiences in Texas at what is consistently rated among the state's top five birding sites. The Audubon Society's Houston Outdoor Nature Club has long championed Bolivar Flats as a flagship Texas Gulf Coast birding destination.
The Bolivar Lighthouse at Port Bolivar, a surviving 19th-century iron lighthouse that served as a hurricane shelter for hundreds of residents in 1900, is one of the Bolivar Peninsula's most visited historical landmarks and provides the physical and symbolic connection to the Great Galveston Hurricane that remains the deadliest natural disaster in American history. Rollover Pass, a tidal exchange channel cut through the peninsula mid-island, is a popular fishing spot where anglers cast directly from the roadside seawall into the pass as it moves fish between the Gulf and East Bay on tidal cycles. Fort Travis Seashore Park, near Port Bolivar, preserves the earthwork fortification history of Galveston Bay's coastal defense with WWII-era concrete gun emplacements alongside camping and a public beach.
Bolivar East RV Park serves guests year-round in the Texas Gulf Coast's subtropical climate, where mild winters attract snowbird travelers and the spring migration window from late March through May is the peak season for the birdwatching community that treats Bolivar Flats as an annual destination. Summer beach camping season runs June through September. Reserve concrete pad sites ahead for spring migration weekends, when the combination of Central Flyway shorebird concentration and the peninsula's limited campground inventory creates competitive demand from the Texas birding tourism audience.
