Beaver Lake Campground

Custer, South Dakota

75 RV Sites, 9 Cabins, 6 Tent Sites

Beaver Lake Campground sits at 5,300 feet elevation in the heart of South Dakota's Black Hills, a position that delivers reliably cool summer temperatures when the lower plains swelter and places the region's most iconic landmarks within easy striking distance of camp. Owned and operated by Julian and Kachina Starr, the campground brings genuine hospitality to a setting that sells itself — the only question is how many days to stay in a landscape that rewards every direction you choose to explore. Cabins outfitted with fresh mattresses and mini-fridges provide comfortable solid-wall accommodations alongside RV and tent sites spread across the wooded grounds. The Starrs have invested in thoughtful upgrades throughout the property — from inviting outdoor seating areas decorated with handcrafted pinecone art to the practical infrastructure that makes extended stays easy. The campground's character reflects ownership that genuinely cares about the guest experience, and the warm welcome that returning visitors describe consistently is not accidental at a park this personally run. The Black Hills landscape at this elevation is a distinctive blend of ponderosa pine forest, granite outcroppings, and open meadows where pronghorn and white-tailed deer move through camp at dawn and dusk. The cooling effect of the 5,300-foot elevation is one of the campground's most practical assets — daytime temperatures here run 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Rapid City in the valley below, making July and August genuinely comfortable for hiking and sightseeing when lower elevations are hot. The cooling effect of elevation makes this one of the most comfortable summer destinations anywhere on the northern plains, and morning light on the pine ridges surrounding the campground creates the kind of scene that makes guests slow their departure itinerary by a day or two. Crazy Horse Memorial, the ongoing mountain carving honoring the Lakota leader, is just a few miles from camp and warrants a full evening visit when the laser show illuminates the mountain face. Mount Rushmore is an easy drive, and its dawn lighting conditions — reached by guests who leave camp early — create a dramatically different experience from the midday crowds. Custer State Park, practically adjacent, offers bison herds, wildlife loop drives, swimming at Sylvan Lake, and the scenic Needles Highway threading between granite spires. Wind Cave National Park adds underground cave tours and open-air mixed-grass prairie bison country within a short drive south, and the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway's tunnel roads and pigtail bridges deliver one of the most dramatic scenic driving experiences in the American West from a starting point just minutes from the campground. Beaver Lake Campground is open through the South Dakota summer season, with June through August delivering the ideal combination of Black Hills wildflower blooms, comfortable temperatures, and the full activity calendar that makes this corner of South Dakota one of the most rewarding family destinations in the American West. Reserve ahead for any summer stay — the Black Hills campground market fills fast once school lets out, and sites with access to the Starrs' hospitality and this elevation's climate are among the first to go.
