Ballards Campground & RV Park
Carthage, Missouri
48 RV Sites, 4 Tent Sites
Ballard's Campground and RV Park in Carthage, Missouri, provides a quiet, wooded camping retreat in Jasper County's southwest Missouri on the Route 66 corridor — a well-maintained property with level pads, 30- and 50-amp hookups, and a mix of pull-through and back-in sites that gives I-44 and Route 66 travelers a comfortable overnight in an area where Carthage's own historic downtown, Civil War battlefield sites, and proximity to Joplin's regional services create a destination character that the highway corridor's campground inventory rarely acknowledges. Carthage's position at the crossroads of southwest Missouri gives guests access to the Ozark border country, the Four State region's outdoor recreation, and the Route 66 heritage tourism that sustains the old Mother Road corridor's travel identity.
Level concrete or gravel pads with 30- and 50-amp full hookup service, pull-through and back-in configurations, and the wooded site spacing that reduces the density feel of an otherwise practical campground give guests the complete overnight utility access in an environment that sustains the peaceful rural character that guests seeking a quiet alternative to the I-44 chain commercial campgrounds specifically prefer. The campground's wooded setting alongside Upton Creek creates the natural buffer that transforms the highway location into a genuinely restful overnight experience. Pets are welcome.
Carthage's historic downtown square is one of the finest examples of Gilded Age courthouse square commercial architecture in Missouri — the 1895 Jasper County Courthouse, built in Carthage marble quarried from the local stone that made the city prosperous in the late 19th century, anchors a square of Victorian commercial buildings that reflect the prosperity of the marble, lead, and zinc mining economy that Carthage sustained from the 1870s through the early 20th century. The Precious Moments Chapel, a few miles south of downtown, houses the hand-painted biblical scenes and figurine displays of the late Sam Butcher's devotional artwork in a chapel that draws visitors from across the country for its combination of folk devotional art and Ozark border country character.
The Battle of Carthage Civil War site preserves the location of the July 5, 1861 engagement — one of the first significant land battles of the Civil War, fought three weeks before First Bull Run, where Missouri State Guard forces under Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson defeated a Union column in the opening contest of the Missouri border war that lasted the full four years of the conflict. The Carthage Civil War Museum and battlefield markers interpret the border state conflict that produced more Civil War battles in Missouri than any other state outside Virginia and Tennessee.
Ballard's Campground and RV Park serves guests year-round in Jasper County's four-season climate, with the spring and fall seasons delivering the most comfortable camping conditions and the Route 66 cruising season from April through October sustaining the heritage tourism traffic that gives the Carthage area its consistent overnight demand. Joplin, 12 miles west, provides the regional metropolitan service infrastructure — hospitals, major retail, and the full range of commercial services — that makes a Carthage campground practically viable for extended stays. George Washington Carver National Monument, 20 miles south near Diamond, Missouri, preserves the birthplace of the agricultural scientist whose work at Tuskegee Institute transformed southern agriculture. Reserve sites ahead for Route 66 cruising season weekends and fall foliage drives through the Ozark border country.
