Along the River RV Park
Capitan, New Mexico
36 RV Sites, 2 Cabins, 8 Tent Sites
5.01 reviewsAlong the River RV Park in Capitan, New Mexico, occupies a peaceful riverside position in Lincoln County's Bonito River valley, where the Sacramento Mountains' ponderosa pine forest descends to the river in a high-elevation riparian corridor that provides cool summer temperatures, outstanding fishing, and the proximity to Billy the Kid's Lincoln County War history that makes this corner of south-central New Mexico one of the American West's most distinctively atmospheric destinations. Positioned at approximately 6,500 feet elevation in the valley between Capitan Mountain to the north and the Sierra Blanca ski area to the south, the park serves outdoor recreation visitors and history enthusiasts exploring the Lincoln Historic District and the broader Sacramento Mountain landscape.
The park provides big-rig-friendly full hookup RV sites with water and electric service, showers, bathrooms, firewood, dump station, playground, and Wi-Fi in a natural riverside setting where the Bonito River's riparian corridor of cottonwood and willow provides shade and wildlife habitat that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding semi-arid mountain landscape. The pet-friendly atmosphere accommodates the hiking dogs and companion animals that outdoor recreation visitors to the Sacramento Mountains consistently bring, and the park's riverside location provides the natural ambiance of running water that transforms a mountain camping experience from merely comfortable to genuinely restorative.
Capitan's most famous cultural distinction is as the birthplace of Smokey Bear—the actual black bear cub rescued from a 1950 forest fire in the Capitan Mountains and subsequently adopted as the US Forest Service's fire prevention mascot whose image has educated generations of Americans about wildfire prevention. The Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan's downtown preserves the story and the actual Smokey Bear's grave site in a small but historically significant attraction that draws visitors to this remote Lincoln County community from across the country.
The Lincoln State Monument, approximately 12 miles east of Capitan, preserves the entire one-street village of Lincoln—the county seat of the 1870s Lincoln County War—in a state of remarkable historical integrity, where the courthouse from which Billy the Kid escaped in 1881, the Tunstall Store, and the other buildings of the frontier conflict stand largely as they did during the war that made William Bonney the most famous outlaw in New Mexico history. The Sierra Blanca ski resort above Ruidoso, approximately 20 miles south, operates one of New Mexico's most popular ski areas and year-round resort amenities that provide additional recreation within the Lincoln County landscape.
Along the River RV Park operates year-round in Capitan's mountain climate, where the 6,500-foot elevation delivers the cool summer temperatures that make Lincoln County a preferred warm-season escape from the hot desert communities below—Roswell and the Pecos Valley to the east bake in summer heat while Capitan's valley enjoys daytime highs in the mid-eighties and cool nights that require a sleeping bag well into June. The Bonito River's fishing season, the Lincoln heritage sites, and the Sierra Blanca ski season together create a four-season recreation calendar that sustains visitor demand to the Sacramento Mountain corridor throughout the year in one of New Mexico's most scenically and historically rewarding regions.
