Lake Piru Recreation Area
Piru, California
228 RV Sites
Lake Piru Recreation Area sits inside Los Padres National Forest less than an hour from Los Angeles, giving Southern California campers a genuine mountain-lake escape without a long haul out of the city. The lake is the anchor for nearly everything here — water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding, and one of the better fishing destinations in Ventura County all happen right on the water.
The campground offers 238 sites spread across the recreation area, with electric and water hookups available on most, full sewer connections for select sites, and all the practical amenities: clean restrooms, showers, and on-site laundry. Picnic tables, fire rings, horseshoes, and a disc golf course keep things busy on shore between runs on the lake.
The surrounding foothills and Los Padres backcountry add hiking and wildlife watching to the itinerary, and the lake itself shifts character depending on the season — busiest in summer with powerboats and swimmers, quieter in fall and winter when anglers take over and the crowds thin out. Wildlife sightings along the shoreline are common throughout the year.
Day trips are easy in any direction from here. The beaches at Ventura and Santa Barbara are both under an hour by car, the Santa Monica waterfront is a straightforward drive south, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley makes a worthwhile cultural side trip for history-minded visitors.
For anyone in Southern California looking for mountain-lake camping without leaving the region, Lake Piru Recreation Area delivers the full package. Book a lakeside site and make the most of the water.
