5.01 reviews
Surrounded by canyon walls cloaked in Douglas fir and ponderosa pine on the western approach to Durango, Colorado, HTR Durango Campground offers a diverse lodging lineup—cabins, cottages, RV sites, and tent sites—in a natural setting that positions guests between the historic downtown of one of Colorado's most-visited mountain communities and the broader outdoor recreation landscape of the San Juan Mountains. A well-maintained county road off U.S. Highway 160 West provides access to the campground after a straightforward 1.5-mile drive from the highway corridor. Accommodations span a range of comfort levels, from fully furnished cabins and cottages suited to guests who prefer a stationary lodging experience to RV sites and tent positions for traditional outdoor camping. A dog park, children's playground, and seasonal heated pool give the property a complete family-resort infrastructure alongside its natural mountain setting. The proximity to downtown Durango—just minutes from the campground—means guests can access restaurants, shops, galleries, and services without a significant drive, while still returning each evening to a forested canyon environment. The Animas River, which flows through downtown Durango and continues south through the Animas Valley, is the primary natural recreation corridor for guests based at HTR Durango. Fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout on the Animas draws anglers of all skill levels, and the river's lower canyon provides kayaking and whitewater paddling opportunities accessible from the city. Hiking and mountain biking trails in the national forest surrounding Durango are extensive, with access points to the Weminuche Wilderness—the largest wilderness area in Colorado—reachable on day trips from the campground area. Mesa Verde National Park, approximately 35 miles west of Durango via U.S. Highway 160, preserves the most extensive collection of ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in North America and is one of the anchor cultural destinations in the Four Corners region. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad—a historic steam-powered excursion train running through the Animas River canyon between Durango and the old silver-mining town of Silverton—is one of the most popular individual tourism experiences in the region and a consistent draw for guests based at campgrounds in the Durango area. HTR Durango Campground is most active from late spring through early fall, with summer representing the peak season for Mesa Verde visits and Animas River recreation. The campground's elevation provides some relief from the intense summer heat that characterizes lower desert destinations in the Southwest, though afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August and should be factored into daily activity planning. Reservations for cabins and RV sites should be secured well in advance for summer and holiday weekends, when Durango-area accommodations fill at a high rate. The Durango area's position in the San Juan Mountains at 6,500 feet of elevation gives the campground a reliably cool summer climate compared to lower desert destinations in the Southwest, and the canyon setting provides natural shade and forest cover that make outdoor activity comfortable even during the warmest weeks of the season.

First time we’ve camped here and it was stellar! Lovely setting up in a beautiful canyon. Quiet and shaded. Small campground, but has fairly good sized campsites. Very clean restrooms with some of the largest shower stalls I’ve ever been in. Staff is very friendly and helpful. An excellent place!
